The title says it all. SpanishDict is a wonderful tool and Spanish learning resource. Like any translator, it’s not perfect, but it’s the most accurate one that I’ve used in my 8 years of studying Spanish. Here are 5 reasons why I love it.
1. It sends your text through 3 translation programs so you can compare results.
2. They post articles about common grammar issues learners face, such as the difference between ser and estar, pronunciation, Spanish dialects.
3. When you translate a verb, you also have access to tables of all of its conjugates, with irregularity being clearly marked.
4. It has an app so that you can translate on the go.
5. Each entry also comes with a list of examples of the word being used in sentences, a LOT of sentences.
PRO TIPS
Sometimes, it’s better to translate whole sentences rather than individual words. Words can change meaning in different contexts, and phrases in English may not make sense translated directly into Spanish.
Think about your audience when using certain words. The same word can have different meanings in different dialects. For example, you may not always get the same thing if you ask around Latin America for a torta.
If you’re uncertain about how to use a word, don’t just translate it. Look through the definition to see how it’s used in sentences. You can use SpanishDict's Examples feature to see multiple examples of how the word is used in sentences.
Read your translations carefully. Sometimes homophones are mistranslated. I once submitted a paper that had a sentence that went something like: The man watches the sunrise. > El hombre relojes el amanecer. This sentence is mistranslated because, rather than using the third person singular verb mirar (to watch), “watches” has been translated as the plural form of the noun reloj. It should be El hombre mira el amanecer.
